My Reasons for NO Cardio……

Posted: January 10, 2012 in Uncategorized

Day by day I see people all around me constantly running like  bored hamsters on their wheels, trying to burn off those unsightly kilos! I always pondered why? Why do they have to do cardio and I only have to strength train to keep the fat off? This lead me to a lot of reading and study and, apart from great eating habits, I found that there are some negative effects of aerobic training:

  • Elevated Cortisol levels
  • oxidative stress
  • Accelerated Ageing
  • Lower testosterone levels in men

Cortisol is an important hormone in our bodys thats involved in many needed functions like regulation of blood pressure, insulin release for blood sugar maintenance, immune function and inflammatory response. The problem is that when we get stressed this hormone is over secreted and this causes our bodies to store fat (visceral belly fat) instead of burning it. High cortisol also makes you age faster as it increases oxidative substances in the body that produce inflammation in the brain, heart, gastrintestinal tract and reproductive organs! There is also ample evidence to that aerobic training leads to immune suppression putting the athletes at a greater risk of infection, espically upper body respiratory illness. The worst aerobic exercise you could do is a long continuos session (roughly  90 minutes) at a moderate to high intensity.

“So, what do I do?”  I hear you asking?

Strength Training: builds muscle which in turn burns fat (energy) at a higher rate, it also triggers a greater release of growth hormone which burns more fat, (and helps us stay looking younger) as well as lowers cortisol and inflammation.

High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT): Sprint! If you can, sprint outside as you will be working at YOUR maximum capacity(not a machines). If not jump onto a bike, or treadmill, and try your intervals on there. The benefits of HIIT include: increased burning of Visceral and subcutaneous fat, increased hormone production and  conditioning!

Now it’s not all bad, and I do realize that some people actually have a passion for thumping away on treadmills for hours on end. But for those of us just wanting to shed some unsightly fat in the smallest amount of time possible than a good combination of strength training with some HIIT is your way to go.

If you’re a little lost and need some  help with organising a fat loss program then come book in with one of our friendly coaches and we can get you started on the right path!

Enjoy

TONIGHTS SPIN CANCELLED! :(

TONIGHTS SPIN CLASS IS CANCELLED! Sorry if this has caused any inconvenience to anyone of our athletes. We have covered tonights class with Deano’s Boxing Bonanza if you still want to sweat it out :)

I have always used protein shakes as a staple in my supplement regime as it has always had science to back up the added benefits. But I have never had the same response that I had off of the ASN HP-100 Protein! In my years of protein abuse I have NEVER recovered faster overnight than the 4 weeks that I was on it. Now it may not be the greatest Tasting protein on the market but results speak for themselves and ASN have found a believer in me. I have been off the HP-100 protein now for the last 2 weeks and switched to another to compare. Compare WHAT! I still woke sore after a workout and it took days to recovery, I would normally be used to this sort of pain but thanks to my new HP-100 I don’t have to.Don’t take my word for it though try it out you have nothing to lose and everything to gain.
